A doctrine is a set of beliefs held by a church. The Puritans beliefs included that man existed for the glory of God and that man's first concern was doing God's will. They looked for corporate and individual conformity of The Bible and its teachings as well as moral purity.

The Puritans were godly people who came from England to escape religious persucution. When they arrived in the New World the government was based on a Theocracy which means The Church was in control of the Government so The Puritans were in control. They believed that sin was a terrible thing. The Puritans had very harsh punishments for people who sinned, this is because The Puritans thought of their world/community as a Utopia or PERFECT WORLD so whenever someone sinned they were corrupting the perfect world and those people were usually killed or severly punished. They also belived in Predestination which means that no matter what you do in your life it is already decided on wether or not you go to Heaven or Hell. However people started to go away from the church so The 1st Great Awakening occured. The Puritan leaders encouraged people to come back to the church and told of The Spiritually Elect, these were people who had been touched by God or The Holy Spirit and were allowed to also go to Heaven. These new elects were also known as someone who could connect the people with God because they were Holy and in between. Now that The Puritan leaders slacked off a little with pushing Predestination and people realized that anyone could become Elect and go to Heaven lots of people returned to the church.

Hope that clears things up for you mate

The Puritans were Calvinists. John Calvin's theology is found in two books entitled, "The Institutes of the Christian Faith." Those two books and the Bible contained Puritan theology. The children were taught the Westminster Shorter Catechism. A number of Presbyterian, Congregationalist, and Baptist churches use it today.

Puritans felt the church of England didn't go far enough to purify themselves. Many wanted to be separated from all other Christians They pursued both moral purity down to the smallest detail as well as ecclesiastical purity to the highest level. They believed that everyone should do what is right before God and live a humble and obedient life.
