The original Royal Iris, was a Mersey Ferry boat , named 'Iris' and owned by Wallasey Corporation. The Ferry ship was sent to Zeebrugge in the World War (I) , whereupon the King George (V) bestowed the 'Royal' to her name.
The more famous 'Royal Iris' was a later Mersey Ferry Boat, Also owned by Wallasey Corporation. She was known locally as the 'Fish and Chip' boat because you could buy fish and chips on her. Also she had a dance deck for evening cruises in the Summer. Her other less well known nickname was the 'Merseysippi Lil', because the naval architects who designed her to look somewhat like a modernised Mississippi Stern Wheeler Boat.
At the end of her Mersey career she was moved to South Wales , with the idea of becoming a floating club, but was unsuccessful. Then moved to Thames in London, with a similar idea in mind. Today she is still in the Thames, just below the Thames Barrier on the south side of the tideway , unused and unloved, looking very sorry for herslef.
