a prehistoric tiger with large sharp teeth ---- There were several species of extinct sabre-toothed felines (cats). They originated in an epoch called the Oligocene (almost 40 million years ago) and persisted until just over 11,000 years ago. The largest (called Smilodon) is, I'm pretty sure, the sabre-toothed tiger that you're referring to. Smilodon roamed the US western plains and California and was probably contemporary with ancient humans. It had canines that were as long as 7-8 inches and weighed more than 400 pounds, which is about the size of the male African lion.
The Smilodon often called a saber-toothed cat or (incorrectly) saber-toothed tiger, is an extinct large cat that was native to North and South America. There are three widely accepted species of Smilodon:
Smilodon gracilis died out about 500,000 years ago and was the smallest and earliest species of Smilodon- estimated to have been only 55 to 100 k.
Smilodon fatalis died out about 10,000 years ago. It replaced its earlier cousin Smilodon gracilis in North America and was spreading into South American at the time it became extinct. It was between Smilodon gracilis and Smilodon populator in size and about the same as the largest surviving cat, the Siberian Tiger. This species was about 1 m high at the shoulder and is estimated to have ranged from 160 to 280 kg.
Smilodon populator also went extinct around 10,000 years ago. Its range seems to have been confined to the eastern parts of South America. It was much larger than its cousins, S. fatalis and S. gracilis, possessing a massive chest and front legs, and is the largest known variety of sabre-toothed cat. It was more than 1.22 m (48 in) high at the shoulder, 2.6 m (100 in) long on average and had a 30 cm (12 in) tail. With an estimated weight of 360 to 470 kg (790 to 1,000 lb), it was among the heaviest known felids ever. For comparison, the largest modern cat, the male Siberian Tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) can reach a total length of 3.5 m (11.6 ft) "over curves" (3.3 m or 10.9 ft "between pegs") and a weight of 306 kilograms (675 lbs) so the Smilodon populator was taller and heavier but was of shorter length with a shorter tail.
I think its the smilodon
it just does
meat
Sabre tooth tiger
Hunting and procreation
Extinct. There are none left.
Taller than a human.
you dont want to know. Really I am THE CHICKEN
It was slightly larger and bulkier than the largest tiger we have alive today
It is very possible sabre tooth tigers actually had teeth. In the movie Ice Age, the sabre tooth tiger had two (or one) long, sharp, front teeth. This can be called a theory. But this is proof that the sabre tooth tiger might've had teeth.
i like big buts and manly mans
Xenosmilus was the now extinct Sabre-tooth Tiger.
