Essentially a large portion of the country wanted to pass a bill (main part was ending slavery, and taxes on slaves) while the south thought that it was imposing on their rights to pass the bill as a country, rather then on a state by state basis. So they tried to split from the rest of the country because of this disagreement.
The reason the Southern US States wanted to secede from the Union was to protect their "way of life". Part of the South's "way of life" was the institution of slavery. The Southern States formed the Confederate States of America. They decided to fight the Union forces sent to end their rebellion rather then to surrender their plan to form an independent nation.
