Italy changed its alliance. Italy wanted to stay neutral, because their alliance was supposed to be defensive, not offensive. Italy changed sides later in the war because the Allies offered them new territory if the Allies were to win World War I.

Dual Alliances were not invented in World War I. Any time two countries were allied in a military alliance, it was a dual alliance. It was just the name of an alliance in the WWI period.

The countries that were in the alliances in world war one were.. Britain, France and Russia formed the Triple entente. Germany, Italy and Austria - Hungary formed the triple alliance.
Originally it sided with Germany and Austria when they looked like they had the upper hand. As soon as Germany took major loses in the Eastern and Western fronts it quickly switched sides to the allies. It's more in depth than that but that's what basically happened. Think it was due to the fact that Mussolini had been thrown from power and a new government had replaced him.
