"Island Hopping"
The US dropped an atomic bomb on Japan
there wasnt really a conflict that caused Japan to attack the US. the US was not at war with Japan until after Pearl Harbor, in which the Japanese were the aggressors.
Protect Japan
Japan bombed us at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7th 1941 and we were at war with them until they surrendered on Aug. 15 1945.
I'm not siding with anyone here. But it was pretty messed up that Japan bombed us. Then again you have to think why did they bomb us? Well because we banned exports to Japan which is needed to survive, Japan practically didn't have any resources. The fact that we banned exports to Japan is a conflict (it is for Japan). Not only was that a conflict but, the attack by Japan was cruel and made the conflict worser. The attack on Pearl Harbor was a huge conflict for America. The conflict was still going on while they were having war, for both Japan and America. So they have their shares of conflicts. However, they made two compromise. They decided to go to war and settle it. And the second compromise was when Japan surrendered and signed the peace treaty.
Iwo Jima was important to the Allies' Island-Hopping strategy with it's airfields and proximity to Japan .
are you in Mrs. Hawe's class ?
Japan's military command was in one place for the strategy to bomb cities until Japan surrender. The US understood that Japan would hold but 2 were sufficient.
Because Japan only had enough oil in their reserves to support a 2 year war.
"island hopping" across the south Pacific while bypassing Japanese strongholds.
In World War II, the American strategy was, primarily, "Europe First". Most of the troops, and the majority of the aircraft, were devoted to winning the war against Germany. Japan, Roosevelt thought, could be left to simmer on its own. However, there were substantial Navy forces that weren't especially required for the European conflict, and so Navy forces were used in the Pacific. Following the victory in the Battle of Midway (June 1942) the Japanese were on the defensive; after losing four aircraft carriers, they really didn't have much offensive capability. The primary strategy there was "island hopping"; destroy and occupy only the important islands (the ones with airfields) and bypassing and isolating the more lightly-fortified islands.
To prevent the US (by eliminating the Battleship Fleet based at Pearl Harbor) from interferring with their plans of conquest.
