At the beginning of the US Civil War the so-called Zouave Rush was a battlefield tactic. Instead of advancing in a close line, stopping to fire from time to time, soldiers charged in loose order at a fast pace. They would then fall flat to the ground, making the defensive enemy forces unable to shoot them with any degree of accuracy. It was named after a French soldier in the French war in Algeria in 1831.
The California Gold Rush of between 1848 - 1849 was 12 years before the start of the US Civil War.
False. The California Gold occurred before the American Civil War of 1861- 1865. The Klondike Gold Rush occurred after the war, beginning in 1896. This rush is sometimes called the Yukon Gold Rush.

The Zouaves were one of the many new Union regiments formed on the outbreak of war. These often had exotic names and uniforms. The first pitched battle of the war, Bull Run, saw these units marching into battle in amateur style. After the humiliating defeat of that battle, the more conventional regmental structure was adopted.
The word "zouave" comes from an Arabic word. The Zouave was a member of a French infantry unit originally composed of Algerians wearing a brilliant uniform and conducting a quick spirited drill. This uniform became very popular in the US before the Civil War and many state militia troops adopted this uniform and name. They typically wore baggy pants and were usually very colorful.Zouave rifle was a short barrel rifle that was adopted by the Zouave troops. These rifles had a longer blade bayonet as compared to the standard rifle bayonet in order to make up for the shorter gun.
