Lepidus, Octavian and Antony
In ancient Rome, there were only ever two triumvirates, never a third.Yes, there were. The other member is Crassus.A new Roman Republic was declared in 1849.Three men held power in a triumvirate. They were : Carlo Armellini, Giuseppe Mazzini and Aurelio Saffi.
The Romans appointed many triumvirates, as it means a committee of three men. However the most famous of these is the first and second triumvirates. The first triumvirate consisted of Caesar, Crassus and Pompey. The second consisted of Octavian, Lepidus and Antonius.
On the contrary, Lepidus was an associate of Augustus. After the defeat of Caesar's assassins, Octavian (later Augustus), Marc Antony and Lepidus formed a triumvirate - splitting up the empire - Antony the East, Octavian the West, and Lepidus North Africa.
The second triumvirate was made up of Lepidus, Antony and Octavian. Lepidus tried to overreach himself and was defeated by Octavian and made a high priest, which was a political exile, but not a social one. Octavian and Antony, who never got along, fought a civil war for dominance. Antony committed suicide and Octavian became the first Roman emperor.
The second triumvirate never really got along. Antony and Octavian clashed from the minute Octavian entered Rome to claim his inheritance. They reconciled and along with Lepidus formed the triumvirate. Once they had defeated Caesar's murders, and eased Lepidus out of the picture, Octavian and Antony formed an uneasy alliance which finally ended in the civil war which brought Octavian to supreme power.

After Julius Caesar there was conflict between Marc Antony, the leader of the Caesarians (the supporters of Caesar) and the opponents of Caesar. At first Octavian sided with the opponents. Then Marc Antony and Marcus Aemilius Lepidus (another leading Caesarian) formed an alliance which Octavian quickly joined, leading to the triumvirate (three-man alliance)
