The naval fleet did two main things in the Civil War. The first was to create a blockade so that the South was strangled from supplies from England and France. Also, it didn't allow the South to raise much of a navy and to ship cotton out. The second strategy was to cut the CSA in half via the Mississppi River. The charge up the Mississippi River was led by Union Admiral David G. Farragut. This was to cut the CSA from inside and not allow supplies to reach the western rebellious states.
