In 1865, United States Senators made an annual salary of $5000, which was increased to $7500 a year in 1871. Currently, it is $165,000.
The $7500 probably bought more, but adjusting for inflation from 1872 is difficult because inflation statistics were only tracked from 1913.
In 1872, the annual salary of senators and congressmen in the United States was $5,000 per year. This was the amount set by the Salary Act of 1871, which increased their pay from $5,000 to $7,500 but was later reversed to the original amount.

I could be wrong about this, but he didn't have a salary. He was a wealthy man, as was all of our first President's, so a salary wasn't considered. The Presidency wasn't thought of as a "job" it was seen as a public service for man to give back to his nation and then go home when he had finished his term of office. Our political figures today have made politics into a profession and is part of the problem.
