The purpose of the novel is to address the problem of slavery and racism, as it was about a black family during and after the civil war. It shows how the culture of oppression was a great burden on the African-American community and that any oppressive action against them should be stopped and they should be treated with respect like everyone else. Sorry I cannot decently centralize Morrison's claim in a direct, specific way, but it has to do with the problem of oppression on the African American community and that it should be resolved, so that that demographic can progress in society.
