17 is the most common age for 20th century "youngest" men in war. According to the subtitle of a well known photograph, which has been published in many books concerning the Spanish-American War of 1898, there is a 13 or 14 year old US Sailor on the US battleship USS Oregon observing (the sailor's intensely observing, while other sailors are amongst him on deck) his shells impacting the Spanish warships during the Spanish American War of 1898. A 16 year old British Sailor was posthumously awarded Britain's highest award while manning his anti-aircraft gun when his warship was attacked by enemy planes during WWII. Normally, during the Korean & Vietnam Wars, if any men were 17 or so, they were transferred to Europe, where it was safer.

The ages varied greatly in the Civil War. There wasn't a law saying how old you had to be to fight. But most soldiers were just teenagers! Often there jobs were to be drummers, the job of the drummers were important, because they told when to retreat or change a battle plan. They did this because there wasn't any technology for soldiers to communicate easily.
The Korean War was the first LIMITED WAR fought in the ATOMIC AGE. Limited to the use of CONVENTIONAL Weapons only.
