Women were treated as property and in a wealthy family it could mean a gain of land or power. Passion was considered sinful in the 11th and 12 century, but the returning Crusaders brought back some the ideas about love from the East which included romantic love.
Church Law in the Middle Ages dictated the a marriage could only be entered into on a voluntary basis. So no judge would ever sentence a person for refusing to marry someone else. Angry and disappointed fathers was of course another story.
