Well, first of all, as I write this, it is only now going on 1300 Surrey time on 21-03,

My best guess for what you saw in the SSW was the setting of the brightest star
in the sky (after the sun), Sirius, at magnitude -1.5 . The colors and non-uniform
rate of descent are easily accounted for by atmospheric effects near the horizon.
Nearby and in the same general direction are several more of the total of 21 "first magnitude"
stars, as Orion, his hunting dogs, and the object of their pursuit all disappear from view
in time for Spring: Procyon in the other dog, Aldeberan in Taurus, and Betelgeuse and
Rigel in Orion himself.
But perhaps more interesting than these is the scene taking place in the hour
after sunset, also near the horizon but somewhat north of these ... more toward
the WNW ... as Venus and Jupiter sparkle brightly, and change their positions
relative to the stars and to each other from each evening to the next.

If you can see the lights flickering then there is a good chance that the frequency of the generator is low. To increase the frequency just increase the speed of the generator. On bigger diesel engines there is a knurled knob, located on the fuel rack, that can be turned up to increase the speed. If the unit has a frequency meter check to see if it is on 60 or 50 Hz depending on what country you live in. Don't depend on the frequency meter as they are not always accurate. Use a test meter that has a frequency scale and set the generator with the meters reading.

A Snake tracks it's prey by flickering its tongue. This is how a snake smells its prey. Most vipers use their tongue as well as their heat sensitive pits located near their eyes. This allows them to detect variations in temperature. A snake does not have a nose to smell nor are they able to hear, as all snakes are def.
