The California was the closest ship to Titanic when she sank. They did not respond to the Titanic calls of distress because the wireless operator on the California was asleep because he was the only operator on board and had been working since dawn on the 14th. Another reason the California is important is because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the California. It was transporting an unknown cargo and some of her crew had only a week to prepare including the wireless operator who took the wrong chart with him and so did not know what ship they could see in the distance. If he had the chart then it would have told him that it was the Titanic and they might had made more of an attempt to contact her.

Some reports indicate that the radio operator on the Californian had turned his radio off after having received a rude complaint from the Titanic radio operator.
