The Province of Carolina was the land south of Virginia colony that was given to the eight Lord Proprietors by King Charles. The government started in Albemarle County in 1664 which was later divided into four counties. Another settlement near the mouth of the Clarendon or Cape Fear River started their own government. A third colony became Carteret County Colony had a government in
Port Royal, near Beaufort but later moved to Oyster Point, which became Charleston.
