The official cause of death is a heart attack. There is no evidence of any foul play.

Answer

The official cause of death is a heart attack. However, this was apparently based on a cursory examination of the deceased pope's body, an examination so brief that the diagnosis has been ridiculed by medical experts. the pope's personal physician said that John Paul I was in excellent health, had low blood pressure and was an unlikely candidate for a heart attack. No autopsy was performed.

Others say that the pope may have been killed by poisoning. Some of the evidence is consistent with such a conclusion, although this can only remain speculation. Certainly, there were many within the Vatican with a motive to murder John Paul, once it became known that he intended to rid the Vatican of corruption.

Answer

According to official sources in the Vatican, he died of a heart attack. Some question this diagnosis however and think he was poisoned.

Another answer from our community:

I think you mean Pope John Paul I. He was murdered before he could set in motion plans to investigate financial skullduggery within the Bank of Vatican. This investigation would have revealed money laundering, extortion, and murder. He held office for a total of 33 days, one of the shortest in Vatican history.

This was uncovered finally by author David Yallop in his bestselling book In God's Name. This investigation took years to compile and tells the entire sordid tale that included top Vatican officials in several countries including America. Despite Yallop's expose' nobody has ever been charged with the Pope's murder.

Another Answer:

While the death of Pope John Paul I is suspicious, there is no evidence that he was murdered and Yallop makes a number of accusations and suppositions without providing a single ounce of proof.

The evidence that Pope John Paul I was murdered by one or more of the cardinals is purely circumstantial. John Paul I had become aware of widespread corruption and links to the mafia, under cover of secret membership of the Freemasons. On 28 September, John Paul I told Cardinal Baggio that he knew of Baggio's membership in a Masonic lodge and and said he would transfer the cardinal to the backwaters of Venice. The same evening, he told Cardinal Villot he must resign his position as the Vatican's Secretary of State by the following morning and return to a retreat in his native France. The following morning, the pope was found dead, in suspicious circumstances. This was compounded by initial, deliberate misinformation of the facts of his death and by removal, foolishly or otherwise, of all evidence that could explain John Paul's death.

We are left with suspicions, but no proof that Pope John Paul I was murdered. If this is what really happened, it was probably because the pope planned to clean up systemic corruption in the Vatican. It appears that many seniors clerics in the Vatican could have had a motive to kill John Paul, not just Baggio and Villot.
