There is no way to know for certain. The cause of many cancers are still unknown, although theories abound. We know that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer, but in many cases we cannot point to a single cause. Mr. Ebert's cancer originated in his thyroid gland and he was a strict non-smoker, so we know that it was not tobacco use that caused his unfortunate condition.
