In 1858, the election for the Illinois Senate seat held by Stephen A. Douglas was to be decided. Douglas was a Democrat. Douglas' opponent was the Republican Party candidate, Abraham Lincoln. The series of debates the two men had were covered by newspapers throughout the US. Issues such as the Kansas-Nebraska Act and popular sovereignty were debated, along with slavery and the rights of freed slaves. Douglas, being a well respected national figure won the election.
