The Californian was in the water nearby but they'd shut their radios off and had stopped for the night because of the iceberg warnings. The Carpathia was further away but had their radios on and responded to Titanic's distress calls, arriving the morning after the sinking. The Californian also assisted with rescue in the morning after their radios had been turned back on and they could hear the radio traffic from the Carpathia.

What was the ship closest to the titanic?

The Carpathia was the ship that came to the rescue of the survivors of the Titanic. The SS Californian, however, was the closest ship to the Titanic at the time of its sinking. It did not respond to distress calls made from the Titanic.

What was the californian in the story Titanic?

The California was the closest ship to Titanic when she sank. They did not respond to the Titanic calls of distress because the wireless operator on the California was asleep because he was the only operator on board and had been working since dawn on the 14th. Another reason the California is important is because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the California. It was transporting an unknown cargo and some of her crew had only a week to prepare including the wireless operator who took the wrong chart with him and so did not know what ship they could see in the distance. If he had the chart then it would have told him that it was the Titanic and they might had made more of an attempt to contact her.

Why did titanic sinking distress calls to britannica go unanswered?

There were no laws yet in place about when the distress radios had to be monitored. Not all ships even had them. The Britannica only had crew monitoring her radio during day time hours. Titanic had her collision at night while the Britannica crew slept.

What ship didn't respond to the Titanic?

Most vessels within range of her powerful wireless did receive it, but were unable to make it to the scene in time before she went down. The one vessel that did not receive the SOS signsl was the small British liner Californian, the reasons for this being that she was stuck in pack ice and also the wireless operator was not on duty to hear her distress calls. The Californian was only 10 miles distant from Titanic and the Board of Enquiry after the disaster heavily criticised her captain for not having taken adequate measures to respond to any nearby vessels that were in distress.

What was the name of the ship that tried to warn the titanic of the icbergs and later ignored the titanics distress calls?

Well the ss californian was quite near but they didnt help the titanic, there was also another ship, Sampson which was two to five miles away. It ignored the titanic because it had a lot of seals on board that they had illegally been hunting.

Which ships received distress signals from 'Titanic'?

It is not known because some ships could have heard the distress call but not responded to it but some of the ships that did were the Mount temple, Frankfurt, Carpathia, Prinz Adalbert and the Titanic's sister ship Olympic. One land based wireless station on cape race, Newfoundlands also herd their distress call.

How did the crew attract the rescue ships in titanic?

The Marconi Radio operator used Morse code to send out the distress calls CQD and SOS to any ships in the area who would then be able to come to the rescue of Titanics passengers.

Why did nobody go to help the Titanic when it was sinking?

Carpathia did. It was 58 miles away at the time, so it couldn't get there in time to rescue everyone, but it did respond to distress calls and alter its course to find the survivors. Other ships either were even farther away, or did not have their ship's radios turned on (there was no law at the time requiring a ship's radio to be on past midnight). It was simply a case of bad luck.

What are animals sensitive to?

Some animals respond to mating calls. If the animal lives in a pack or a herd it might respond to a distress call, like the elephants or a pack of wolves. Some animals respond to visual stimuli, such as the infamous 'chase instinct' found in cats (wild AND domestic) and bears. Some animals respond to their sense of smell, as in the pet dog hangin' around the kitchen at dinner time.
