At the time of the battle, in May 1916, Jutland was considered the greatest naval confrontation in history, even dwarfing the Battle of Trafalgar in scope and maneuvering. Although it did not break German naval power for the duration of the Great War, it did secure the upper North Sea for the victorious British. German U-boats, however, continued to plague shipping in the area.
