I'm not sure which controversy you are referring to. However, St. Nicholas was originally buried in his town of Myra (Turkey) but in the 11th or 12th century, I believe, some merchants from Bari in Italy organized an expedition to Myra where they stole the relics and brought them to Bari where they remain today. Turkey even today wants the bones returned.
