The first European settlement in the area now known as the State of Maine was first founded in 1604 on Saint Croix Island by Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons. The first English settlement was established by the Plymouth Company in 1607 at Popham; however, this colony was not permanent and the settlers returned home to England after a little over a year.

At the time of the American Revolution, the territory of Maine was considered a part of Massachussetts, and was therefore under Massachussetts' jurisdiction. Due to long-standing disagreements over land speculation and the advent of the War of 1812, Maine voted to secede from Massachussetts in 1820. Maine was subsequently formally admitted as a state on 15 March 1820 as part of the Missouri Compromise.
