The first animals in space were fruit flies, who were sent into space along with some corn seeds aboard an American V2 rocket in 1947- the mission was designed to measure the effects of solar radiation exposure at high altitudes. The experiemt was a success, and the flies returned to Earth alive and in good health. The V2 rocket was originally designed by Nazi Germany during WW2, and used as a guided missile in attacks against England and France (it was ultimately intended to carry a nuclear payload)- the design was copied and improved upon by the United States following the end of the War. The first large animal to be sent into space was a Rhesus monkey called Albert II, who was launched aboard another V2 on June 14th 1949- it was intended that he, too, should return safe and sound, although tragically he died upon his return to Earth when his craft's landing parachute failed and the ship smashed into the ground. The scientists and mission controllers were devastated, and held a special funeral for him in his honour. Both the USA and the USSR continued to send insects and small animals into space throughout the 1950s, most of which returned safely. The first animal to actually go into ORBIT (as oppose to just going straight up beyond the atmosphere and then back down again) was the Russian dog Laika, who was sent up aboard Sputnik 2 on 3rd November 1957. She died in space when her oxygen supply ran out, although her body did return to Earth when the Sputnik fell back through the atmosphere. Laika was posthumously given the Order of Lenin (the only animal ever to receive the USSR's top award), and was buried with full military honours.
