Many people opposed President Truman's decision to drop the atomic bombs because the Japanese were already on the losing end of the war. However, Truman didn't want to risk the loss of many more American soldiers with an invasion of Japan. So, to put it in layman's terms, he blow'd them up. Twice (First Nagasaki, then Hiroshima).
