A Christian answer:

Satan was Lucifer, meaning light bearer. Lucifer is mainly used in the story of his banishment from heaven. Isaiah 14:12-15 was seen to refer to Satan identifying him as a fallen angel cast out of Heaven.

A Jewish answer:

The word 'sahtan' simply means 'adversary'. Angels are task specific creations that do not have freewill. HaShem has created angels to act as adversaries to humans to give humans the opportunity to choose to do good.

Another answer:

Satan's name has never changed. Satan was a brilliant personality who sadly fell from grace.

Christians believe:

Lucifer - Light bearer. One of the 4 named angels in The Bible. Ironic since he will eventually be doomed to eternal darkness.

Others believe:

It is a common misconception that the name of the The Devil is Lucifer, or "Light bearer" from the passage Isaiah 14:3-20 , however the passage really refers to a Babylonian King to whom it gives the title of "Day Star" or "Morning Star" (in Latin, lucifer or lucem ferre Literally "Bearer of Light"). Stars were thought to have been living being in ancient times, and therefore if a star fell from the sky they were believed to be an angel or celestial being falling from "heaven" (also another word for "Sky").

The Devil in the Old Testament ( or the Jewish "Tanakh") is called Satan (הַשָׂטָן ha-Satan, meaning "Accuser") and in Greek the word "Devil" (διάβολος pronounced: diávolos) also means "Accuser". Stemming from the Book of Job, in which ha-satan is an unnamed angel who accuses humans of having evil tendencies. God gives ha-satan permission to test Job's faith by killing his family, destroying his property, and finally his health however Job still stays faithful to God.

Islamic beliefs:

Muslims do not believe that the Devil was ever an Angel. Angels are created from light, while the Devil (or demons) are created from fire and therefore have different origins. In Arabic the Devil is called الشيطان ash-Shayṭān ("The Adversary")

And the devil wasn't always really the devil, he was a jinn, or a demon among the heavens. It was until Iblis (the devil before he was the devil) did not bow down to Adam, that God banished him and his fellow jinn from heaven.

Lucifer. The name means "the bearer of light". Now, his name means other things.

Another belief:

His original given-name is NEVER mentioned in the Bible before he made himself 'satan'(which means 'opposer') the 'devil'(which means: 'slanderer"), and the "Father of the lie" (John 8:44). None of these are names, but rather titles that he has now 'earned' because of what he's done.
