There have been several ships called Discovery. Possibly the earliest was sailed from London by Henry Hudson on April 17, 1610. In 1901, another Discovery was built to go to Antarctica (the South Pole) for an expedition by Robert Falcon Scott. It was modeled after another Discovery (the bloodhound) used in the 1870s as a whaling ship.

Henry Hudson primarily used a ship called the "Half Moon" during his famous 1609 voyage when he explored what is now New York and the Hudson River. The "Half Moon" was a Dutch ship, specifically a type known as a fluyt, designed for trade and exploration. Prior to this, Hudson had also sailed on various vessels, including the "Discovery" during his earlier expeditions for the English crown. These ships were crucial for navigating uncharted waters and establishing new trade routes.
On his third voyage in 1610, Henry Hudson used the ship called the Discovery. This voyage aimed to find a northeast passage to Asia, but instead, Hudson explored regions that are now part of Canada, including the area around Hudson Bay. The Discovery became trapped in ice during the winter, leading to significant hardships for Hudson and his crew.

The spacecraft takes its name from previous ships of exploration named Discovery, primarily HMS Discovery, the sailing ship that accompanied famous explorer James Cook on his third and final major voyage. Others include Henry Hudson's ship Discovery which he used in 1610-1611 to search for a Northwest Passage, and RRS Discovery, a vessel used for expeditions to Antarctica in 1901-1904 by Scott and Shackleton (and still preserved as a museum).
