A plantation foi utilizada por Portugal para organizar economicamente sua colônia na América. Afinal, o principal objetivo da colonização do Brasil era exatamente o de transformá-lo num gerador de riquezas para a metrópole.
A monocultura da cana, assim, apareceu para Portugal como a forma mais imediata de obter tais recursos. A partir daí, o uso em larga escala do latifúndio e da mão-de-obra escrava principalmente negra vieram completar o quadro que caracterizava a plantation. Plantation é o nome dado a um modelo de organização econômica em que se destacam quatro aspectos principais: latifúndio, monocultura, mão-de-obra escrava e produção voltada para o mercado externo. Durante o período colonial brasileiro, este foi o modelo adotado em larga escala, sendo a cana-de-açúcar o principal produto cultivado até meados do século 18.
