Columbus made it known to Europe that there was a whole new landmass located between Europe and Asia (across the Atlantic), althought this wasn't known until after his death. He also sailed in the name of Spain, despite being an Italian, allowing the Spanish to be the first Europeans to arrive. This gave them an advantage in conquering land, in which they did more of, and were able to spread their culture and language more than other Europeans. This is why the majority of the Americas speak Spanish. By opening Europe up to this new land, Europe was now able to acquire more resources, wealth, and power. He also introduced Europeans to a new ethnic group: the Native Americans.
