Neither. Bermuda is an island off the coasts of the Carolina's, but it is an English territory, not part of the United States.
It was nearly all in the South - so the North had to do the invading, into largely unfamiliar territory, and the South was defending its homeland, which was a highly emotive cause. This was one of the advantages of the South during the war.

There is no state directly north of South Australia. The Norhern Territory, which is a territory and not a state, borders South Australia to the north. To the northeast is Queensland.

The United States paid France to renounce their claim on 828,000,000 square miles of territory. What was known as the Louisiana Territory stretched from the Mississippi River in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west and from the Gulf of Mexico in the south to the Canadian border in the north.
The South was fighting in its own territory.
