This was the story of Adam and Eve in Genesis. 'Adam' means 'man' and 'Eve' means 'from man' and so whether or not Adam and Eve were real people or whether they represent humankind (mankind) is often debated in Christian circles. The story goes that Adam and Eve were spiritually immortal and were allowed to live in a beautiful garden. Everything was theirs except they were not to eat of the 'Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil' . However, tempted by Satan in the guide of a serpent, Eve ate the fruit disobeying God, and offered some to Adam who also took it, again disobeying God. Because Adam and Eve now knew of evil as well as good, God could not look upon them in the same way, and, bbecause of their disobediance and treachery against God, they, as sinning beings, were condemned to die. (only to be fully redeemed when Jesus came). Whether or not the story is 'true' literally is irrelevant; the story tells of mankind turning away constantly from their creator because 'they know best' and as a result become spiritually dead unless they accept Jesus into their lives as their saviour.
