Ashton WB492 was used in the early fifties by RRE Malvern for trials of the NBS bombing system, flying from the Ministry airfield at Defford. Towards the end of the trials it was found that the aircraft had been over pressurised on ground checks on a number of occasions and as a precaution high altitude flying was discontinued. Some flights were continued with an RAF crew and it was on taxiing out prior to one of these that smoke was seen coming from the aircraft. The crew shut down and evacuated the aircraft and within minutes the Ashton was engulfed in flames and completely destroyed. Colin J. West NB. The information above is based on my memory of the events and as far as I can recallect, accurate.
