Roanoke Island, in what was then considered Virginia but is now North Carolina, was the first English settlement. Unfortunately, none of the colonists survived. Jamestown VA was the first permanent colony.

The first English colony in North America was established on Roanoke Island in 1585, in what is now North Carolina. A second colony, the so-called Lost Colony, was established two years later, but vanished. A third colony was established at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607.
