The first battle was on Battle Road, Lexington. The British were going to Concord to fetch weapons that they heard were being stored by the American "minutemen" (Paul Revere was riding to warn people that they were coming) and some farmers decided to attack them. It was hopeless, and none of the British died in that fight. Even before then, there was tension. In 1770 there was the Boston Massacre, where 6 colonists were murdered by the British. That's not quite enough for a massacre, but the Americans wanted to make people angry at the British.
