The very first practical automobile was invented in Germany, 1885, by Karl Benz. The first road trip in this car was taken by his wife Bertha Benz without her husbands knowledge. In 1888 she drove the car from Mannheim to Pforzheim, Germany a distance of 66 miles (106 km) to visit her mother. her two sons were passengers. She fueled up at pharmacies and made several repairs along the way. She even invented the first brake pads when when she had a shoemaker nail leather on the wooden brake blocks that were overheating on downhill slopes. There is a rally held every year in Germany to honor this trip.
