The first programmable, truly functional computer was called the Z1. Earlier computers designed by Charles Babbage, but solely for number computation, were the Difference Engine, and the Analytical Machine. Charles Babbage was unable to complete building either machine in his lifetime due to funding issues, his son did complete a version of the Analytical Machine.
