The United States of America
I assume by "the colonies" the question refers to the Thirteen Colonies which became the United States. The document that recognized the independence of the United States was the Treaty of Paris of 1783.
The document that said America was free from England was: - The Treaty of Paris (There were two "Treaty of Paris" One for the end of the French and Indian War and One at the end of the Revolutionary War.)
Many southerners hoped dependence on cotton would force great Britain to formally reconize the confederacy as an independent nation.
The US gave the country back to them officially on 28 June 2004.
