Bacteria were Earth's first life a nearly 4 billion years ago.
At that time the Earth wasn't very pleasant for creatures like us today. The seas were sulfurous and the air was full of carbon dioxide and nitrogen, with some additional hydrogen, water vapor, and perhaps a bit of methane.
These early bacteria took in carbon dioxide and giving off oxygen until there was enough oxygen in the atmosphere to support our tpe of life.

belive it or not, it was algae,

which breathes in carbon dioxide, and breathes out oxygen.

and oxygen animals/plants need to survive, so algae basically made us.
