In the old days, there was a rather hazy overlap between what are now called Mental Hospitals and the Prison system. ( this should not be confused with the hospitals for the Criminally Insane, which are in effect as the ACLU calls them, Prison Mental Hospitals- with all the trimmings, guards, security mania, bars on the windows, what have you- and some real dangerous nut cases- like a chap who was in the normal( non-criminal) Mental Hospital but ran a guard down with a Lawn mower, killing the man- treated as a grave crime- Bang- into the Criminally insane ward. Bedlam, in England, was long considered the first design-built mental hospital and still exists. strange as it sounds, the name is a corruption of the BIblical Bethlehem but got to mean a synonym for Chaos! ( bedlam broke loose!) Dr. Benjamin Rush was probably the first U.S. Psychiatrist, who made a deep stufy into mental ailments in early Federal times.
