Project Apollo was a series of human spaceflight missions undertaken by the United States of America (NASA) using the Apollo spacecraft and Saturn launch vehicle, conducted during the years 1961 1975. It was devoted to the goal (in U.S. President John F. Kennedy's famous words) of "landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth" within the decade of the 1960s. This goal was achieved with the Apollo 11 mission in July 1969. Apollo 8 became the first manned mission to travel to the moon in December 1968, with Frank Bormann, Jim Lovell (later to be the Commander of Apollo 13), and Bill Anders. They orbited it ten times, and did not land.
The Pioneer 4 space probe had flown past the moon (within 60 000 km) on 4th March 1959.
Apollo Missions
Apollo 1: 3 died in fire during simulation
Apollo 11: Neil Armstrong and "Buzz" Aldrin landed on the moon and took the first steps on the moon. "The Eagle has landed." "one small step..."
Apollo 13: Jim Lovell and 2 others were planned to go to the moon, but an oxygen tank ruptured and took off a pannel of the Command Module. "Houston, we have a problem." They never landed on the moon.
Apollo 17: The last Apollo Mission. Scientists/Geologists collected moonrocks. Other missions were planned, but were cancled due to budget cuts.
The last manned lunar mission was Apollo 17, which landed on the moon on December 11, 1972 and left 3 days later. The 2 astronauts aboard Apollo 17 who landed on the moon were Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt. Schmitt, the 12th man on the moon, was the only trained scientist (geologist) to land on the moon. Cernan, who was the 11th man to set foot on the moon, is also the last man to leave his footprints on the lunar surface. Schmitt acended the ladder about 20 minutes before Cernan returned to the Lunar Module.
The last US unmanned craft to land on the moon was Surveyor 7, which landed on January 7, 1968.
Apollo 11 with Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin on July 20, 1969 , was the first mission to put men on the surface of the moon.
Apollo 11 was the first mission to land on the moon.
