It depends on what excact breed we're looking at. Many whereoriginallyherding dogs, such as the American bulldog, and others tended to be hunting dogs. Most where bred as a form of "catch dog", which was a dog that would find stray cattle, or wild animals and hold them at bay untill the farmer or hunter caught up.
There is some speculation that they where also considered nanny dogs, or dogs that took up theresponsibilityof raising the children of very negligent parents, but nothing has been solidly proven yet.
