In Islam no innocent people should be killed (which suicide bombers often do) and suicide is prohibited. Of course, sacrificing life in battle was always considered the ultimate sacrifice but it was not sought and people who fought for the right cause and didn't die would also have the same reward as those who happened to die. The seventy virgins and similar "quantitative rewards" were probably sometimes used to illustrate the big reward to make it attractive. Later, some half educated preachers may have understood it literally and now spread this misinformation. Fact is, in Islam, nobody knows what anybody's reward will be.
