according to the author, what was the first thing that one noticed about the trenches
At the beginning of the war the US did... absolutely nothing, refusing to get invovled in Europe's affairs.
I'm going to assume that you meant "trenches". They were used to protect soldiers from artillery and/or strafing and bombing. Also they provide cover from enemy fire. Which is harder to shoot, somebody's head or somebody's whole body? They used them in World War two also. It used to be (civil war era) that the opposing sides would just run at each other and shoot. When machine guns were invented that tactic became obsolete. If you watch crime shows then you will see when the cops are getting shot at they duck behind a car or a crate for cover and then when they shoot they just stick their gun and half of their head out. It does the same thing as a trench, but military trenches also defend against artillery and bombs.
bananas
The development of gas warfare, combined with the gatling gun, contributed to the casualties. The important thing to remember is that trench warfare was still the main combat style. When people used to rush trenches, individual rifles could not hold them back. The invention of the gatling gun made this tactic useless.

The thing that causes oceanic trenches would be two ocean plates pulling apart. This would leave a space in between the plates that is the trench.
because they were scared of dying in the world war 1 it is a very scary thing to do so if you have kids do not send them straught to war because they have no idea how bad it is you could get killed on your first day if your not lucky.... over 200,00 soldiers died on there first day because tehy were too scared to move from the trenches that they were camping in...
Nature obiviously.
Deep ocean trenches are made where one plate is submerged under another
