The first use of airplanes was for pleasure. Flying around above the trees must have been a huge novelty and exhilarating fun.

The first practical use of airplanes was for reconnaissance during the first world war. Manned and tethered balloons had been used for this purpose already and it was only natural for airplanes to be used for this purpose as well. Its to make people feel good in the sky.
