Claudius Ptolemy, an Egyptian geographer, mathematician, and astronomer, is credited with the Ptolemaic Model of the solar system. His model posited not only that the Earth was the center of the entire universe and assumed that the planets all moved in epicycles--small circles--that also moved along even larger circles called deferents.
That all other bodies in the universe orbited around the Earth. It's important to remember that Ptolemy's model was a serious scientific attempt to explain the movements of those bodies. Astronomers began to question Ptolemy because it could not explain why planets sometimes appeared to move backwards.

A geocentric model places the Earth as the center axis of the universe. It originated with Anaximander.

This is called the Geocentric model, from the latin prefix "Geo-" for earth or ground. This was dropped by the scientific community at the beginning of the renaissance for the Heliocentric model, which states that the sun is the center of the universe. However, even this has been abandoned. The general consensus now is that the universe has no definite center or, if it does, we can never find it due to the dimensional 'curvature' it has.
