it was not fruit it was the act of deciding to do things their own way and not God's way

The Bible does not identify the fruit, it simply states that Adam and Eve are not to eat of the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Tradition does not have any record of the fruit's identity either.

It is commonly assumed to be an apple, although this is purely gratuitous. This is a pun from the Latin. Apple in Latin is "malum, i, n" (apple tree is "malus, i, f") and the adjective evil is also "malum". How could the ancients resist a pun like that?

What is the meaning of the saying 'all about Eve'?

The saying 'all about Eve' refers to the world's first woman, Eve, as the source of human woes. Eve and her husband Adam were told by God not to eat of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. But Eve listened to the sinister serpent's lie that the fruit would give the couple immortality and divine knowledge. She ate of the fruit, and convinced Adam to do likewise. The consequence was the loss of paradise and of immortality, and the introduction of sin and death into the human condition.

What does the tree symbolise in Genesis?

The tree from which Adam and Eve were forbidden to eat the fruit, was the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (Genesis 2:9). This tree featured in many ancient Near Eastern creation myths, and gave whoever ate its fruit knowledge of everything, including an understanding of good and evil. After Adam and Eve had eaten the fruit, we find God saying (3:22) that they were now like one of the gods - except that they were not immortal. If they also ate of the Tree of Life, they would be equal to the gods and immortal. It was against this eventuality that God had to banish Adam and Eve from the Garden and place a cherub and a flaming sword there, to block the way back to the Tree of Life.

What is the story after Adam and Eve ate the fruit?

A:Before they ate the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, Adam and Eve were innocent and naive, no doubt living every day for the present. They knew nothing of death or the pain of childbirth, nor did they need to work for the things they needed. Having eaten the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge, they were like gods (Genesis 3:22: "And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us..."), knowing all things. The only difference between them and God (or the gods) was that they must die.The story also has a Tree of Life in the Garden, and by eating its fruit, Adam and Eve would become immortal. In Genesis 3:24, God drove out the man and placed at the entrance to the Garden of Eden, cherubim and a flaming sword to keep [block] the way of the Tree of Life. In the Genesis story, Adam and Eve were sent from the Garden and could not be allowed back for fear they would eat of the second tree.
