The goal of Confederate attacking troops (the divisions of Generals George Pickett, James Pettigrew and Isaac Trimble ) was that to break through the center of the Union line on the Cemetery Ridge.
After 2 days of fighting, General Lee thought the Union army would be tired and vulnerable. His plan was to strike a blow in the center of the Union line and split it in half. His artillery would fire at the a barrage to weaken the enemy. Then General Lee sent the Confederate cavalry around to the rear with the purpose of striking its reserves and creating more havoc and fear. This would leave the Union center line with no support.
Things did not work out. The artillery did not have the effect as they expected due to the terrain and defenses. The Confederate cavalry was met by the Union cavalry and were beaten back. This left General Pickett's division on their own but they failed to reach the Union lines with enough men to disrupt and defeat them.

General Henry Wager Halleck's mission in the Wester Theater were complex and not easy to execute considering the difficult water hazards and heat of the South. With all that in mind, he had orders for General US Grant to complete. He wanted Grant to secure the Union position on the eastern banks of the Mississippi River. Halleck advised Grant to march to the northeast of Vicksburg and assault the Confederate force that was fortifying Yazoo City. Grant was charged with ending the Confederate fortification building and to capture their cannons. Also, to capture any shipping located on the nearby Yazoo River.
Confederate General Richard Garnett was arrested by his commanding officer, Stonewall Jackson after the loss at the First Battle of Kernstown in 1862. Jackson charged Garnett with retreating in that battle without asking permission to do so. Garnett remained in custody awaiting a court-martial. General Robert E. Lee asked Jackson to release Garnett as the Second Battle of Bull Run was soon to begin. Garnett was a loyal and competent brigadier general. He was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.
The bloodiest battle of the Civil War was fought there from July 1st to July 3rd of 1863. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, is the site of a massive and extremely costly battle in the American Civil War. The battle raged from July 1 to July 3 in 1863, in and around the town itself. It was the climax of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's second invasion of the North. After defeating Union General George Gordon Meade's Union Army of the Potomac on the first day, and nearly winning the second day, Lee launched an assault against the Union center in what has become know as "Pickett's Charge," which many consider to be the "High Water Mark" of the Confederate Cause in the Civil War. After briefly breaking the Union line, the Confederates were forced back with terrible losses, effectively ending the battle. Total casualty reports differ, but the figure is most commonly put as 51,112 Union and Confederate killed, wounded, captured, or missing, the bloodiest battle of the Civil War and the bloodiest battle in American History ("battles" that last 30 days, like the "Battle" of the Bulge in World War Two, are too long to be called "battles."

Because he ordered all of his men at once to attack instead of setting up his artillery etc. it was a risky plan due to him risking his men.Furthermore, Confederate General Robert E. Lee falsely believed that the Union center was weak, when, in fact, the opposite was true.
