World dominance.
There really wasn't much choice. After Pearl Harbor was bombed the US declared war on Japan and as a result Germany, who was an ally of Japan, declared war on US. We would have gotten involved anyway because the goal of Germany was world domination. The plan was beat England and then invade the US.
Germany's goal or should it be Hitler's goal is the superiority of the Aryan race along with the idea of getting rid of the bad traces such as the Jews of whom Hitler blamed for the defeat of Germany in WWI. While Japan's hope to achieve is to destroy the US's capacity for war along with the fact that Japan needed lots of natural resources to accomodate its needs and of course to make sure that Japan will be the only sun to rise in the East.

Germany's goal was to control all of Europe. At the beginning of the war, it was only at war with France and Britain, as well as Poland, but that country was quickly defeated. To further its goal, Germany invaded France first because an invasion of Britain would take more planning and it would be suicide to get another nation involved while the only nation bordering it that wasn't its ally or extremely neutral (Switzerland) was still in action. It knew that a two front war was what made them lose World War I.

Japan and Germany's goals during World War Two were not different. They were the same. Their military governments both had the goal of world domination and they were both engaged in wars of extermination with world domination, using infections, gas, injections, starvation and other means to exterminate people. The reason for World War Two and the goal of world dominaton was the control of these governments by their militaries and their joint military goals to control the rest of the world.
For the US everything besides Europe and the Pacific was a sideshow, the defeat of Germany and Japan was the goal.
