Independence from the current US Federal Government. They felt that the government was interfering in the rights of the states to rule themselves and make decisions about such things as slavery and tariffs. They were also unhappy about taxation and other laws.

The major goal of the Union army in the US Civil War, was to defeat the Confederacy enough times for the rebellion to cease. The Union launched many military offensives to defeat Southern armies in the field of battle, believing that this would end the Confederacy.

The Union navy also did as much as it could to blockade Southern ports and help capture Southern cities. Two notable captured cities were New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama.

Additionally, the surrender of Vicksburg Mississippi due to a Northern siege, was an important capture for the North. Also, the capture of Atlanta helped the reelection chances for US President Lincoln.

The aim of the North during the Civil War was to restore the Union...they planned to do this by using three main strategies:

1.) Blockade Southern ports to prevent supplies from coming in or going out

2.) Gain control of the Mississippi River

3.) Capture Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy

Successful secession from the Union under the concept of "state's rights" and continuation of their Plantation slave based economy without interference from northern abolitionists.

They clearly had this right under the older Articles of Confederation that gave the states more control than the Federal government, but it was unclear if they had this right under the new Constitution that in general the Federal government more control than the states (except in cases not specified in the Constitution).

The goals of the US to end the rebellion of the Confederate Southern states changed as the war progressed, and especially so when the progress of the Union seemed stalled. It came to a time, where conventional thinking was seen as not truly helping the Union's war efforts. Based on this situation, President Lincoln turned to General US Grant to lead the military forces of the Union. In 1864, Grant undertook what military historians call a strategy of exhaustion. One of the results of this policy was to damage the Confederate armies sources of supplies. This caused civilian property seen as aiding the enemy to be destroyed or taken for war purposes.
