At the time (not the same as today), young people (at the time they considered YOUNG to be anyone under the age of 30) wanted to be free: Long hair (not the crew cut or clean look); beards (not clean shaven); sandals (not conventional closed toe shoes); dirty blue jeans with tears and holes in them and decorated shirts and jackets (flowers peace symbols, etc) (and not suits or dress pants & shirts or jackets). They wanted money for doing what they wanted to do, and NOT work at traditional work places (they wanted to make money opening their own flower/plant shops, leather goods, smoking pipes, beads, jewelry, etc). They wanted to just play and listen to music and enjoy life, and not have to do conventional work (conventional jobs).
The (US) people (generation) of the 1960's wanted their kids to get an education, dress properly, look decent (short haircuts, clean-shaven), and become professional people (Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, etc.), and if necessary serve their country in the military. The counterculture wanted to "do their own thing." And that was one of their sayings, "...do your own thing, man." Which was, partly, as described above.
